I've been holding off on this to avoid spammage but I figure now is as good a time as any to post it: all the fic I've been doing lately! Yay!

I've been posting my shorter fic over on tumblr because I don't feel it's long enough for a proper post, so that comes first:

Hat's Entertainment (Dragon Age: isabela, Merrill and Varric shop for hats)

About Stories (Dragon Age: The life and times of Varric Tethras)

What Is This Feeling
(Dragon Age: fem!Nathaniel and fem!Anders, complicated ladyfeelings)

And secondly, livejournal fic!

Title: Queen of Air and Darkness
Spoilers: None
Warnings: Witchy business
Rating: G
Summary: Originally written for Dragon Age Ladies week on Tumblr befire it turned into Morrigan week. I can think of no lady more awesome than Flemeth, and I've been wanting to write a bit about her life and times for a while. Replaying Origins recently has helped! Title is from The Once and Future King, although Flemeth is far and away better than any of the witches in that.

Why is it indeed, livejournal, that during a series of Doctor Who that has been packed with more emotion than any preceding one (lost babies! True Love Conquers All! Possible DEAAAAATH! Time Displacement! Etc!) as well as the summer I spent reading a Song of Ice and Fire (also known as Emotional Gutpunch: The Series) AND the end of AC:Brotherhood the thing in recent media that has affected me most was grey!Twilight Sparkle after her friends had abandoned her, standing under a raincloud and crying?

I mean

I'm not sure I can even watch that episode again. That was just too distressing.

(Everything turned out okay, though! And it was a great episode, don't get me wrong: I think I'm just rather emotionally overinvested in pony friendship)

EDIT: Tonight's Doctor Who, by the way, was lovely until the last ten minutes or so. Matt Smith is a wonderful actor and I wish to give him all the hugs, and I am heartily sick of River Song.

I got your card today [ profile] kristinkat! It's wonderful, I love it. The potato is a very underrated vegetable and I don't feel that it appears on enough postcards. The drawing of fancy!Wrex was the icing on the cake!

Thank you very much!

I went to the Eurogamer expo with [ profile] flying_girl73 today! It was the first thing of this kind I'v been to and it was pretty fun! I got to try demos of Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3 multiplayer (no story, boo), Rift for... some reason, Arkham City, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and a bunch of other stuff. I also won a keyring for knowing Mr. Freeze's real name and where Batman's parents were killed, which was both kind of nice and a crippling conformation of my nerdiness.

Mass Effect 3 was the demo that was available in America with no new stuff. I was pleased to see the krogan princess irl though, her design looks great (I didn't realise she was wearing a veil!). I also liked that they retained the different-guns-do-different-stuff thing, so I could switch up to deal with shields and armour. On a more embarassing note, it took me ten minutes to work out how to climb a ladder. Damn those Ceberus fiends and their complicated technology!

Assassin's Creed: Revelations was just the multiplayer, which is more or less the same as Brotherhood multiplayer but streamlined a bit more- choosing ability sets is easier, I found that bleding worked a little better, etc. It's also set in somehwere new (middle east?) and I really enjoyed seeing the new character models. The lady models all look super fun! I wonder if you could cosplay them.

Arkham City was also really fun. Playing as Catwoman was great, and I loved her capoeira-y fighting style. It looked very awesome and graceful, and quite different from Batman's. Batman himself is pretty much as he was in Arkham Asylum! However it looks like he has some new gadgets (got to use a radio scanner) so that'll be fun. There's also more crime scene-y elements (the demo ended with trying to work out a bullet trajectory). They redacted the impirtant plot details during cutscenes, which got kind of confusing!

Uncharted 3 multiplayer was super hard because I am a complete dweeb at that kind of thing, but at least it was pretty!

(I also had a guy hit on me while I was playing Mass Effect 3, which was... interesting.)

I leave you with the only celebrity I met:

With the advent of a new season, sometimes someponies feel like their interest in things might have waned. Maybe they're not so interested in dressing up, or they remembered that they're no good at fair isle knitting and had to get another pony to help them (thanks mum!). Maybe they think they look stupid, or they've never worn a wig before.

However, if you persist and give it a go, you might be surprised by the results!

Your very faithful student, Twilight Sparkle.

p.s series 2 episode 1 ROCKED.
giefu: (I came I saw I Roried?)
So regular readers of this blog will know that I a) find Ezio Auditore da Firenze very very hot and b) have a thing for Roman soldiers.

I just played the Passion Play Level (there are no good screenshots of him in the outfit why is this so)

I'll, uh... I'll be in my bunk.

I got [ profile] evilsherbear and [ profile] featheredraven 's postcards this morning! They're so brilliant, I love the little drawings you did me :D (and HOLY CRAP A WONDY POSTCARD WHERE ON EARTH DID YOU FIND IT). Thank you so much! They brightened my day considerably (we have roadworks going on outside the house atm and the drilling. Will not. END.). I hope that mine got through okay too.

In other news, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood continues to be entertaining (I have recruited all my bb assassins! They are so cute) although I remain terrible at stabbing dudes in the neck. I thought I was okay at multiplayer buuuut apparently not any more? I spent most of my last few matches hiding in a haystack. This was alternated with playing Space Marine which.... eeeh. It's mainly for Warhammer 40k fans and no-one else, although it has an amazing female Imperial Guard called Lieutenant Mira who is, shock, fully clothed, non-sexualised, badass and competent. She even ties her hair back for combat. I am in love with her.

So, I don't write much Doctor Who fic, considering, and there's a good reason for it: basically every once in a while episodes come along that satisfy everything I would put into a fanfic. The Girl Who Waited was basically everything I have wanted about Amy and Rory, forever. It did all the showing to Moffat's telling about the Pond marriage. I have so many feelings. SO MANY.

Title: Buried Deep
Author: [info]thewaterbandit
Spoilers: None
Warnings: I don't know any Italian at all so Ezio's dialogue might sound kind of weird.
Rating: G
Summary: This is for that very small overlap of Assassin's Creed/Doctor Who fans in the big Venn diagram that is fandom. Basically holy crap, Ezio totally met Rory.

"Is this some kind of Templar trick?" Ezio asks, throwing the plumed Centurion's helmet aside. "Or are you a new kind of follower of Romulus, playing at soldiers?" )

I just deleted my very first internet book club review (the one I did on The Name of the Wind). It went up about a year ago and every couple of weeks since I've gotten a youtube comment telling me how wrong I am, how stupid my opinions are and, occasionally, to go f*ck myself. The final straw came today with this little masterpiece:

Cut for NSFW language )
I know that in a sense I am letting them win by deleting it (also I'm not sure what exactly they meant, their grammar and syntax are a little odd), but I honestly can't be bothered with that level of vitriol over a book I haven't read since I reviewed it (and, thanks to its fans, will probably never read again). I have other reviews in friendlier forums and frankly I am not in a happy place at the moment and I don't need the extra grief.

So, things I have done recently:

1. Signed on to recieve Jobseeker's Allowance, which was made a billion times more complicated than it needed to be by the byzantine online system. I get it, government, you don't want to give me money, please try not to make the fact quite so depressingly obvious.

2. Reached A Storm of Swords, part 2 in my epic A Song of Ice and Fire readathon. I have a huge crush on both Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, which I suspect might become awkward in later books.

3. Traded in La Noire (review: Cole Phelps is an annoying little pill) for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood! I am the world's worst assassin (blundering off rooftops is a speciality) but I am having a ball. Ezio remains devastatingly handsome, and if I squint in the Desmond bits it's a bit like playing Uncharted! Also in combat you can kick people in the nuts, which because I am twelve is the most amusing thing ever.

4. Doctor Who is... eeh. I'm enjoying th Adventures in Rory Punching Things bits, and next week's episode looks FANTASTIC. Older Amy with a sword! YES.

5. Worked on various fandomy things ([ profile] spicyshimmy, check your spam filter!). As AUs go, which one would you guys rather? More Western DA2 or pulp adventure DA2?

All postcards are away! Also, I have a ton left, so if anybody else feels like asking for one, don't be shy about PMing me your address and I'll get one to you ASAP.

To celebrate, a meme I've been saving!

The first five people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble/ficlet of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level.

[fanfic] Endless
Title: Endless

Let's get this exchange party started!

It's printed. It's sent. I posted my dissertation this morning. It's done.

Words cannot describe how weird I feel. From start to finish this has been an almighty hassle (let's not even talk about the £120 printing job that included all of the markup in the final version and nearly gave me a damn heart attack, or the £90 on top of that it cost to fix it) and now it's done done done and I am FREE. and now I need to find a job WAAAAAUGH

Incidentally, I went out shopping to celebrate and saw a pack of really cute postcards and wondered- how would you guys like to do a postcard exchange? If there's enough interest I'll look into how you set it up (can't be that hard, right?). It'd be nice to do something frivolous for a change!
giefu: (Default)
So, I didn't get the job. Boo. It was for a Saturday position at my local library, and it would have made my life a hell of a lot easier while I look for other work, but honestly I think I was wildly overqualified (I had the same job five years ago in secondary school) and they probably wanted someone who wouldn't also be looking for a better job. It still sucks, especially because I'm feeling so stressed and unhappy about my Master's work (I haven't slept properly all week), but that's the way it goes. I'll start looking for stuff in earnest in September anyway.

(Honestly, to snap out of it all I have to do is read about the riots. I'm stupendously lucky to have so much stuff)

In better news, [ profile] flying_girl73 lent me her copy of Portal 2 before she left for Edinburgh! It's really really fun, I've been blasting through the single player campaign over the weekend and am just about to finish it. I think that it's almost better than the original- especially the writing. Sadly I don't have anybody to play co-op with ): Something for when she comes back, I think!
giefu: (The British are coming!)
I'm back from Cornwall! And crashed into a large amount of work ahshsjsjdnb.

Yeah, I officially have exactly a month now until my dissertation is due which means I've had to give up pretty much all net distractions. I'll still be commenting and stuff as that doesn't talk up much time, but I don't have the brainspace for anything more complicated than that. After a big freakout and breakdown yesterday I'm trying to maintain a positive attitude, and I think that I might get through this one. Hopefully.

In other news, I've read the first two books of A Song of Ice and Fire and holy cow, they're really good! I'm kind of frustrated I can't watch the tv series (damn you, sky atlantic). I want to see how it all translates.

In conclusion, why I should be doing my dissertation on Big Barda instead:

p.s I have a job interview on Friday! Wish me luck!
giefu: (Default)
Of course the DDOS attacks ease off just as I'm about to go on holiday :p See you all in a week! I kind of need this break tbh, I can't seem to shake this cold and I want the extra time to try and get into A Game Of Thrones, which I brought to take on holiday with me!

I leave you with a sample of dialogue from Hudson's Legacy playthrough, which was just so him that it made me snort with happy, surprised laughter:

'He (Malcolm Hawke) lives on through what he taught us. And these weird magical contraptions.'

(It's really bad, Hudson is basically my favourite of my Hawkes and he's a sarcastic asshole with ridiculous hair)
