giefu: (blood hate rage cuddles)
So then I think I got norovirus? Yesterday was mostly sleeping and waiting for the sweet embrace of death after a night filled with terrors. I'm mostly okay now, just waiting for the nausea to subside so I can have an actual cup of tea. My last one was Monday morning and if I don't have one soon people will suffer.

In other news: I have a job! A seasonal one, anyway, working at John Lewis. I don't think it exists outside the UK, so non-UKers, imagine a very swanky department store. I'll be helping them sell stuff over Christmas, and I start just after my birthday. The boost in my finances is very welcome: I'm currently in the middle of the agonizing decision of Assassin's Creed: Revelations vs Skyrim. On the one hand, dragons! On the other, oooh Signore Auditore (Silver Fox Edition!). It is so hard.

Now back to listlessly watching Phineas & Ferb

I have been wanting to do this for a long time! Okay, so as it is Halloween and all things spoooooky are in order, I thought I'd share some original fiction I wrote about three years ago. I like writing horror a lot, and when I write outside of fandom it's my comfort zone, so to speak. I love to do with words what artists like Emily Carroll manage in pictures. Sometimes I even manage it within fandom, although that's rare! re-reading it, I still think this short story is pretty good. I don't think I've ever really matched this again, so it's nice to put it out here and share it with all of you.

The poem is 'Saturday Market' by Charlotte Mew. I have omitted the second stanza for brevity.

Bury your heart in some deep green hollow

Or hide it up in a kind old tree;

Better still, give it the swallow

When she goes over the sea.

They call it Abbott's Water )

I guess I should tell you guys that I got my dissertation results yesterday! I had to call the office in Cardiff because the system for students who are at home isn't great (blargh) but I got my mark eventually! I got 64, which is a pass- I think it equates to about a 2:1 which is slightly above average.

I can't say I'm massively pleased with what I got: I worked really hard on my dissertation (don't need to tell you guys that!) and I don't really think that the mark reflects the amount of sheer effort I put in, but then I *did* write it on comic books, so maybe I sabotaged myself. :/ To put it in perspective, I got the same mark for my Tolkien essay that I handed in unedited (long story! It involves panic attacks and played out very like Lesson Zero). I'll have a better idea what went wrong when I get the marked version in the post.

And hey, I'm bandit m.a now, which I guess is nice.

I totally forgot to post about the Doctor Who finale! Which should probably tell you my thoughts on it, I guess. In other words, I was underwhelmed. The fix was completely cheap, I didn't really understand why the Doctor had to marry River, and everything happened way too fast. At least everybody lived, I guess? Merlin was much more satisfying!

Real world wise, I've been applying to jobs left, right and centre and should hear back from 2 interviews I did tomorrow. One of them is something I really want: a job at a gift shop in an historic house. It's only part time and quite difficult to get to, but the people seem really friendly and it's in exactly the sector I want to work in (heritage). Unfortunately my parents don't seem to be so keen: they're more excited about the fact I got offered a 3 month internship in a digital recruitment company writing copy and doing digital things for them. I don't know. Maybe I'm being unambitious but it doesn't appeal to me that strongly at all. And of course I have the interview for this internship on Monday! It seems like a lot of things are happening really quickly and I'm not sure what to do.

Aaaanyway apart from that I've also been enjoying this Pony game. Warning: super addictive!

So, things I have done recently:

1. Signed on to recieve Jobseeker's Allowance, which was made a billion times more complicated than it needed to be by the byzantine online system. I get it, government, you don't want to give me money, please try not to make the fact quite so depressingly obvious.

2. Reached A Storm of Swords, part 2 in my epic A Song of Ice and Fire readathon. I have a huge crush on both Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, which I suspect might become awkward in later books.

3. Traded in La Noire (review: Cole Phelps is an annoying little pill) for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood! I am the world's worst assassin (blundering off rooftops is a speciality) but I am having a ball. Ezio remains devastatingly handsome, and if I squint in the Desmond bits it's a bit like playing Uncharted! Also in combat you can kick people in the nuts, which because I am twelve is the most amusing thing ever.

4. Doctor Who is... eeh. I'm enjoying th Adventures in Rory Punching Things bits, and next week's episode looks FANTASTIC. Older Amy with a sword! YES.

5. Worked on various fandomy things ([ profile] spicyshimmy, check your spam filter!). As AUs go, which one would you guys rather? More Western DA2 or pulp adventure DA2?
Hi! Well, I haven't posted in a while (Dragon Age had a lot to do with that...) so what have I been doing? Let me present you with a handy bulleted list!

  • Planning essays and dissertations :| Two of them are actually kind of cool: I'm writing about intertextuality in The Lord of the Rings and my Master's dissertation will be on mythology and comic books. This would go better if anybody in the department could actually help me! Weirdly, nobody on the English Literature staff knows that much about comic books. I WONDER WHY.
  • I've also been watching a Danish crime drama called The Killing, which I highly recommend if you can find it- the main character, Sarah Lund, kicks all kinds of ass and the story is really twisty and interesting. There's like, three or four episodes til the end and I still genuinely have no idea who the killer could be.
  • I'm resisting the urge to buy the new Pokemon game. Partly because my DS is at home, partly because I'm still playing through Dragon Age 2 and Dead Space 2, but mostly because my pokemon strategy is terrible: I catch all the cute ones. FOR SOME REASON this doesn't work out wduring battling. Having a team of like four Jigglypuffs, a Clefairy and a Pikachu is adorable but doesn't make you the pokemon master.
  • My favourite pokemon is actually Bidoof, a creature that my brother charitably nicknamed 'the retarded beaver'. This should probably tell you everything you need to know about me and pokemon.
  • SPEAKING OF VIDEO GAMES I have actually started a new character on Dragon Age 2. Let me introduce you to Hudson Hawke, mage, asshole and owner of some epic sideburns:

His favourite things include telling Carver to quit his girly whining and randomly threatening people with the templars. Unfortunately due to my inability to be mean all the time Hudson comes across as slightly bipolar, which at the very least means that he and Anders will get along well. He has Alistair's haircut, big ears and a weirdy broken-looking nose which the screencap doesn't show too well (headcanon: he walked into a door).

Well, that's me. How are you guys?

Y'all know I don't normally post about real life happenings (my life is boring, no other deep dark reasons) but last night I dreamed the first episode of Legend of Korra.

This kind of thing happens fairly often, actually. In between Avatar seasons 2 and 3 I dreamed the season 3 first episode (obviously it was nothing like the real first episode, it was set in a ruined desert city and featured some awesome fight scenes and Zuko kneeling in front of Mai asking for forgiveness for.... some reason) and I sometimes dream extra Doctor Who episodes. And one time I had a dream that I was in Inception (Mal and Cobb were hosting a dinner party for everyone only it was super awkward because Mal was still crazy and murderous) only I knew it was a dream and I got my totem out only it was Ariadne's totem so it didn't work and then I woke up. Or did I?

Anyway, Korra.

It was pretty awesome, actually. It had Korra and some friends traveling around in a jungle to learn firebending (her teacher was this cool Sun Warrior type guy) and they stumbled across Aang's tomb. Korra went inside and saw a statue of Aang and then picked up a book that was full of pictures of his adventures. I think there was an urn containing Appa's ashes there too. She had a loooong discussion with her dad (who was Sokka and there for some reason) about what it all meant and living up to Aang's legacy and then some tribal anti-benders attacked. And then there was some fighting and I woke up.

So, uh, yeah. Just kind of wanted to share that. I do hope that we get to see Aang's tomb in Legend of Korra, it would be melancholyawesome.
giefu: (what remains of us is love)
Happy Valentine's Day everybody! Having no significant other to share it with this year, I'll instead say that you are all lovely, wonderful people and I enjoy sharing my online life (and sometimes my real life!) with you very much.

In celebration, my favourite declaration of love ever.

Yes, love is not simply flowers, hearts or waiting two thousand years outside a big box. It is jumping down a shark's mouth and punching it to death from the inside.
giefu: (YAY)
And now for something completely different.

I turn 22 today! I think that this calls for a party...

A gif party.

Urgh, I'm sorry I haven't really been putting up any kind of content recently. I do love blogging and reviewing and writing but the last week has sucked harder than an orchestra of vaccum cleaners. Basically, about this time last week I was told (via a secondhand facebook message) that my landlady housemate wanted me to decide wether or not I was doing a PhD within the next two weeks, so she could replace me if I wasn't staying on. I have only been doing my MA course for a little over month, and the work is just starting to bite.

Massive freaking out ensued.

Unfortunately this has rather been the rule rather than the exception for my life since about April/May when my long-term boyfriend broke up with me because I wouldn't commit to the possibility of marrying him, followed by 2 month's very awkward, very boring work with his mum. Then the kitchen flooded (it's only just getting back to normal). Then I returned to Cardiff to find most of my housemates obsessed with marriage, boyfriends and babies. So whatever brainspace I'm not currently using on coursework or my future, I'd rather spend on simple, undemanding things like knitting and anime about transvestites who fall in love with nerdy girls.

I'm not asking for sympathy- it will get better, I know it will, and putting this up here feels horribly like whingeing- but I'm just asking you guys to bear with me until it does, and letting you know that I haven't fallen off the face of the planet.
giefu: (YAY)
I have finished university!

And I got a 2:1!

Now, on the Masters! And then the PHD! AND THEN I SHALL RULE THE WORLD.
giefu: (domestic goddess)
Oh, hey! I haven't talked in a while, huh? So tell you what, here is what has been up with me and you can tell me what has been up at your end!

Doctor Who, Yostuba, plus video games! My life is so rich and interesting shutup )

Anyway that's it apart from to warn you that I'm working at data entry two days a week at the moment, and that it's so boring that it sometimes saps my will to live, so if I don't get back to you for a while that's probably why.

Number of dissertations completed and handed in: one

Sense of personal achievement: immeasurable

Times I want to read Paradise Lost again: NEVER.

That's it! One module down, only three more essays to write! (aaaand then it's on to my Master's but let's live in the moment, shall we?) I AM SO EXCITED YOU GUYS.

And now, because this is the way I celebrate things round here, a meme:

*You give me a character or pairing, and a number from 1 to 1092.
* I find the song that matches the number on my iPod library (if it's a video or a podcast I'll pick the song that's nearest your number), and write you something that incorporates both song and character/pairing.

giefu: (Haruhi Suzumiya)
The desktop meme that [ profile] futuresoon just did:

1. Stop what you're doing. Print Screen.
2. Print screen your current desktop.
3. If you have Photoshop open, print screen.
4. If you have a music player open, print screen.
5. Pick a folder, open it, print screen.

This will probably surprise nobody )

Well, back in Cardiff, and two weeks until my dissertation is due. *cracks knuckles* Time to make up for that ME2 timesink, I think!

p.s Dear Brain, the correct time to pitch me an England & the suffragettes Women's History Month fanfic is not just as I'm about to fall asleep to get ready for a very early start. Also see my earlier line re: dissertation. Get in line.

ppps. Go Liet! Way to beat Arthur at his own game :D

I've entered the Kenyon review short story contest.

Not expecting to win at all, but this is the first time I've entered anything with my writing and now I am hella nervous. I know my writing's just about good enough for fandom and it's okay for creative writing, but is it good enough for contests? (I also had to majorly cut the story down to the required length- I hope that it's made it more tense but I had to remove the poem that was at the centre of it and argh argh argh) I guess I won't know until I try, eh?

Any good vibes would be appreciated. I'll keep you all posted for late spring when the winners are announced!

Getting up at 7.30 is fundamentally bad for the soul, I know this to be true. Especially when my stupid brain wakes me up an hour beforehand as an extra special treat.

Oh well, now I have a legit. excuse to stuff myself with sugar: I need to stay awake for Bronte and creative writing!

(Why has my Earth Kingdom fic turned into 'Earth Kingdom: Totally did it with Oma and Avatar Kyoshi, aw yeah')

And why can't I stop writing these niche crossovers oh maaaaan
giefu: (serious business)
A very merry Christmas to everyone! It's the evening here now, I've eaten enough food to stun an ox and been thoroughly spoiled by my family, and I hope that you all had a lovely Christmas too.

(In nerd news, the much-hyped Doctor Who special was singularly disappointing; overblown, bombastic, self-consciously mythic and irritating, with a totally stupid climax- all the bad things about the series rolled into one with very few of the good bits (though I really liked the inclusion of Wilf). I hope that New Year's one is better, because this was utter garbage. Apart from John Simm making an excellent crazypants villain, but then that's what he does, isn't it?)
