Okay so I came down with a pretty rotten cold today and spent my time doing nothing except watching Doctor Who (oh Rorrrryyyyy) and reading manga. Fortunately for me, I'd just bought volume 1 of a pretty interesting series! So without further ado, let's discuss Princess Resurrection.

In its baldest terms, Princess Resurrection is a manga about an aloof princess named Hime (so, she's Princess Princess) fighting monsters with her chainsaw and robot maid. If that really isn't enough for you (and honestly, why isn't it?), it's also the story of a boy named Hiro Hiroyimi who was fatally hit by a truck on the way to his sister's new job. Unbeknownst to him, Hiro's sister is working for Hime, a 'royal' whose blood can raise the dead. She resurrects Hiro as a blood warrior to fight in her service. This means that he has to help her defend herself against the monsters that the rival royals send to kill her. He's kind of terrible at it, but luckily Hime is a certified badass more than capable of defending both herself and Hiro.

Really, I love this because of the characters of Hime and Riza. Riza is a half-werewolf girl who kicks as much ass as Hime, though unlike Hime she's not as big a jerk. Hime is basically Princess Azula from Avatar with her moral compass skewed more towards the 'good' end of the spectrum- terrifyingly competent, icy calm under pressure, and unmistakably the leader in every situation she finds herself in. Riza's more friendly and allows Hiro a supernatural friend to help him out when things get crazy, as they often do.If you've ever wondered what Supernatural would be like if Dean was a badass princess and Sam was a half-werewolf girl, or how Hellsing would have turned out if the creator's previous projects had been Disney Princess movies instead of hentai, this is the manga for you.

Oh yes, and all the monsters that they fight are from old Hammer Horror movies (Wolfmen, invisible men, creatures from the black lagoon). Yes.

I just... just.... okay, no spoilers, but this was my reaction:

I think I finally like River Song a teeny little bit! And Rory! Rorrrrryyyyy! Oh man, Rory. I love Rory. He's the best dude companion ever, and I will fight anybody who says different.

(Also. Also Ten. May um. May have a contender for 'my doctor'. Oh, Eleven.)

So The Lodger was pretty much every 'The Doctor fails at normality' fic I've ever wanted to write, so naturally I enjoyed every second of it! Highlights included pretty much everything he did to try and fit in. And the cat. Next week we have River Song (sigh) and ROMANS (eff yeah) and is it me or does it seem like they keep digging at the old series? Not that I mind. There is an awful lot to dig at :p

Now back to watching the footy. Hetalia has made this the most hilarious World Cup ever, especially this match! Come in In-ger-land!

Okay so I just finished watching The Sea Devils, courtesy of futuresoon , and as it was my first foray into old!Who (despite having watched every episode of the new series) I thought I'd write up what I thought for you all. Going to divide this into likes and dislikes, starting with the positive stuff:

I liked:

• You're right, Jo is pretty awesome. I enjoyed her a lot, and I can definitely see why people are excited about her coming back.
• The relationship between Three and Jo was really sweet, and far better, I thought, than a lot of the new!Who companion malarkey. I don't know if it was romantic at all (I got a bit of that vibe? Maybe?) but you could tell they really did care about each other.
• This was my first exposure to Delgado!Master and I liked him a lot. Very pantomime villain-y at times but also prepared to get his hands dirty. His escape at the end and his willingness to dress up at the drop of a hat really made me laugh. Also got a hell of a lot of Magneto/Professor X style Foe Yay from him and the Doctor.
• I LOVE episodes with UNIT/military stuff in, so this was a good choice to show me. It was interesting to catch references to the Brigadier!
• The old-style BBC accents/acting were hilarious.
• Three's snark was great. Is that where Eleven gets it from, I wonder?
• Seeing themes occur that must have been lifted from the old series to the new- humans starting war without understanding? Yup, Who staple I see.

I disliked:

• How bloody long it was! By the end I was having a really hard time concentrating and caring about the ongoing story. Maybe my attention span has been ruined by the internet, but I thought a lot of it could have been cut/simplified. The middle act in particular dragged a lot.
• The horrible, horrible synthesizer music. It was like a robot vomiting in my ears. I know some people like it but it just makes my brain hurt.
• Other brain-hurting thing: The opening sequence made me appreciate the new one more. At least it doesn't have Pertwee's face looming out at me from a swirling multicoloured Rorschach-blot void.
• The much-hyped fencing scene. I didn't really like it much at all- it was funny rather than anything else. I'm sorry.

So, overall it was okay but I don't think I'd willingly revisit old!Who again. The problems I have with it are very much due to its time and the quirks of its production, which are things that really can't be changed and are, in fact, integral the feel of the old series. I can understand why people like it, and there are good things there, but I am pretty sure that the old series are Not For Me, doubly so now that I've sampled about six episodes.

Okay, so the last post was  a bit negative, so I thought I'd take the little bit of time I have between now and church to talk about something I did enjoy.
